What is the Autumn Auction?
The Autumn Auction brings the Avalon and Brookewood School communities together to kick-off the holiday season prior to Thanksgiving. This year, the event will be held online.
The online bidding opens Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, at 6:00 p.m.
and will run through midnight, Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020
What is the fee to participate?
There is a nominal registration fee of $20.00 to sign in and peruse the auction items. You may register online with a credit card to obtain a bid number.
Do I receive a ticket when I make my reservation?
No, there is no formal ticket. Simply respond to your online invitation, which should arrive in your in-box the first week of October.
How do I receive a bid number?
When you register and check into the auction website, your bid number will be assigned.
Is there a minimum bid increase for the Silent Auction?
The minimum bid increase for each item is indicated in the description of the item.
How do I pay for my auction items?
Unless otherwise indicated, your credit card information will be kept securely until the end of the auction, and any purchases will be charged to the card of the winning bidder automatically. All bids are final and may not be rescinded after the conclusion of the Auction.
Is the cost of my auction purchase tax-deductible?
You will receive an online generated receipt and statement for your winning bid(s), indicating the deductible amount, if applicable.
How can I support the event if I do not care to bid on an item?
Please consider participating as an Auction Angel or a Special Friend. An Auction Angel makes a monetary donation to specifically offset the cost of the Autumn Auction. A Special Friend donation of $50.00 or more will support the Avalon and Brookewood faculty.
How do I volunteer to help with the Autumn Auction?
It is never too late to volunteer! We particularly need parents to seek out auction donations. Questions: please contact The Advancement Office at 301-963-8022 or eclifford@avalonschools.org, Jeanne Mendelson, at jmacknd@yahoo.com(Brookewood) or mariacalvetti@verizon.net(Avalon).
How can I help during the weeks before the Auction?
If you are a current school parent, participating in a Class Basket or Project is a wonderful way to get involved! Avalon plans on four Class Baskets or Projects, broken down by: Primary School (K-2), Lower School (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and Upper School (Grades 9-12). Brookewood plans for their Class Baskets will be similar.
Your Class Parent will be in touch regarding the theme and how you can help. We ask that the total value of a class basket not exceed $250.00. Among the successful baskets in the past: beer basket, wine basket, children’s book basket (by grade grouping), boys legoselection, girls lego selection, coordinated cooking basket, camping basket, cookout basket, Playmobile figure basket, beach basket, winter weekend basket and so many more!
I have more than one child attending Avalon and Brookewood. Must I participate in both baskets?
Participation in the class basket is not mandatory, although we hope all our parents will join in to the best of their ability. For those families with more than one child in the school, they need only participate in one basket if they wish.
How else could I help?
As noted above, any assistance we may have with acquiring items, gift cards, services, or event tickets is greatly appreciated!
Family Giving: Decide as a family what your donation will be! Business services, a gift certificate from your favorite restaurant, monthly club memberships, a stay at your vacation home, a themed basket; basically, anything you would want to receive as a family would make an excellent choice! Let each family member make their contribution special.
Friends & Family Giving: Reaching out to your friends, neighbors, and extended family members to support the auction with a donation is a great way to give back to the community. If you have friends or neighbors who would like to help, we would appreciate donations to the auction, such as gift certificates to local restaurants and venue events. If you have access to a vacation home, the offering of a long weekend is always wonderful to have and has proved very successful in past auctions. Asking them to participate online is even better!

Neighborhood Businesses. Consider asking for a donation from the merchants you frequent. Small businesses often support schools and the students & families who patronize their shops. Letting them know the auction is coming up and asking if they would like to contribute an item or service is another way to build community. Many businesses or individuals will contribute on the spot! Make it as easy as possible for them by having a donation form handy.
